What is Substance Abuse

Substance use problems occur when a person is using alcohol and/or other drugs at levels that are associated with short-term or long-term harm. Substance use problems are not just a matter of how much of a substance a person uses, but how their use affects their life and those around them.

Substance use disorders often co-occur with depressive, bipolar, anxiety and psychotic disorders.    People with psychotic disorder are over twice as likely to have an alcohol use disorder and six times as likely to have drug use disorder compared to people without a psychotic disorder.
